At Aliana Family Dentistry in Sugar Land, TX, we understand that your dental experience is about more than just a procedure—it’s about feeling comfortable, confident, and at ease in our care. We believe in fostering a lifelong positive relationship with dentistry, which is why we proudly offer sedation dentistry options.

Our mission is to prioritize your well-being and ensure that you feel supported during every step of your dental journey. Read below to learn how dental sedation can help you!

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is an approach that uses medication to create a calm, relaxed state for patients undergoing dental treatments. This can significantly reduce anxiety or fear associated with dental procedures, paving the way for a positive experience. By prioritizing your comfort, we hope to make dental care a more enjoyable and accessible process for all of our patients.

What Is Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety is a common and completely understandable concern that can affect individuals of any age. It may arise from past negative experiences, fear of discomfort, or general apprehension about dental treatments. When left unaddressed, dental anxiety can deter patients from seeking necessary dental care, potentially leading to serious oral health issues.

How Does Sedation Help?

By incorporating sedation dentistry into your dental care, we can alleviate the fear and nervousness you may feel while undergoing dental procedures. Sedation helps create a relaxed atmosphere, reducing feelings of apprehension or anxiety, and in some cases, it may even cause you to forget the procedure entirely. This approach fosters a positive association with dental care and encourages you to maintain regular dental check-ups and treatments.

Types Of Sedation

There are several levels of sedation that are utilized in dentistry. To learn more about each sedative, please read below. To discover the types of sedation we offer, please contact our office.

  • Nitrous oxide: Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. This type of sedation allows you to remain conscious and able to communicate, but with a sense of tranquility and relaxation.
  • Oral sedation: Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your dental appointment to create a relaxed, anxiety-free state. The level of sedation can be adjusted depending on the dosage, and you may feel drowsy but still conscious and able to respond.
  • IV sedation: Intravenous (IV) sedation involves administering medication directly into your bloodstream for a faster, more controllable level of relaxation. We provide both moderate and deep levels of IV sedation.
    • Moderate IV sedation is administered in office by Dr. Baratta and often results in partial or complete amnesia following the procedure. During the appointment, patients remain awake, but relaxed and able to follow instructions if needed.
    • Deep IV sedation renders patients completely unconscious and is utilized for highly anxious patients. For this level of sedation, our team will bring in an anesthesiologist to administer and monitor the sedation while Dr. Baratta performs the necessary procedure.

Patients Who May Benefit From Sedation

Sedation dentistry can benefit a wide range of patients, including those who:

  • Experience dental anxiety or phobia
  • Have a low discomfort threshold or difficulty getting numb
  • Require complex or lengthy procedures
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Have special needs or difficulties sitting still
